BEWARE! There are many fraudulent tax preparers out there. Falling victim to scams or well-intentioned mistakes can be very costly, and potentially harmful to an asylum case.

These are reliable and reputable tax resources, all free:

  • Ca$hMaine Free Tax Prep for low-income residents, at several locations in Greater Portland (and elsewhere in the state)

  • AARP offers free tax prep for all low/ moderate income earners at several locations, including In 2024, the Westbrook Community Center (Saturdays 8-12), Portland Public Library (Wednesdays 10-1:30), Jewish Community Alliance (Fridays 9-12), South Portland American Legion (Mondays 9-5) and more! Appointment required - call 207.518.8579 and leave your name and number.

  • United Way offers free online self-filing with help available, or assisted filing for those who qualify.

  • The IRS has a free online free tax prep service called GetYourRefund. More IRS Free Tax Prep Info

  • IRS Account - create an online account to access information about filed returns

  • For those who don’t meet income requirements for free assistance, one mentor with professional tax experience recommends TurboTax assisted returns; the client has a video call with a preparer, it is reliable and affordable. The price is generally cheaper earlier in the season, so recommend to sign up before March.
